Engineering Manager - Digital Storage Engineering

The responsibility of the Engineering Manager is to manage the Digital Storage Engineering discipline within Infrastructure Engineering which is primarily responsible for design, implementation, support and maintenance of infrastructure related to the target discipline.

The manager is responsible for ensuring that the objectives of the group are met, including objectives in project execution, department budgeting, Human Resource management and development, and client and vendor relationships.

Reporting Information/Location

The Engineering Manager is located at the Auburn Hills operations center and reports to the Senior Vice President of Engineering Technology Services (ETS). This position has multiple direct reports.

Position Responsibilities

Architecture

1. Develop and update the Infrastructure Strategic Plan and direction, which allows for the integration of new technologies and the phasing out of older products and technologies with a 3 - 5 year time horizon.

2. Ensures development and update of Area Standards for services, protocols and platforms which allow for a robust array of supported services yet strives to minimize complexity and costs.

3. Develop and update Approved Product List that specifies models and configurations for new purchase with the goal of enhancing expected life span and reducing complexity in the Infrastructure.

4. Review all proposed solutions that deviate from the standards and decide applicability for use within Comerica's infrastructure environment.

5. Develops strategies for advancing cost effective designs and solutions to complex technical issues and problems.

6. Conducts financial operating studies and develops short and long term strategies to control and/or reduce annual operating costs of Comerica Systems and Infrastructure.

7. Reviews and ensures vendor enhancements to existing hardware and software are compliant with industry and Comerica operations and performance standards.

8. Direct and perform market research (technology and business) to understand changing business situations and develop corresponding long-range architecture. Remain aware and knowledgeable of competition and competitive industry practices, regulations, and trends

9. Ensures development of standards for all aspects of the design process, including documentation, specifications and technical standards (including metrics) of hardware and software performance.

10. Actively participate in client and vendor presentations relative to platform and system software technology.

11. Provide RFP/RFQ specifications for all related service and hardware acquisitions.

12. Assist in development of contingency plans and disaster recovery configurations for all corporate systems and components and in the conceptualization and development of systems and hardware designs to support the corporate disaster recovery plan.

13. Ensure that supervised staff develops and maintains required technical and functional requirements and documentation.

14. Expertise in conformance with the position and departmental requirements by justifying and recommending appropriate training and education.

Infrastructure Projects

1. Guide the Project Management of all medium and large non-routine projects.

2. Oversee the Engineering Designs, Implementation, and support plans for all proposed solutions.

3. Assist in the project planning processes, including the identification of task dependencies, key management issues and the formulation of project alternatives.

4. Ensure the implementation of technology products or services are integrated into the existing systems with minimal disruption to the client and production environment.

5. Performs high-level infrastructure designs and overall systems engineering.

6. Evaluate and approve very complex infrastructure services design solutions and determine feasibility and practicality within client and corporate environment.

7. Provide technical consulting support to internal IS organizations and client-sponsored activities outside of IS. This includes providing client presentation and training resources (staff and materials).

Support

1. Participate in annual IS department planning and budget process. Initiate methods, processes and system enhancements to reduce expenses and improve levels of service.

2. Provide management escalation for clients and Comerica's Infrastructure areas for resolution of incidents that are not being resolved through normal channels.

3. Review impact, duration, risk of proposed emergency changes that impact infrastructure availability and authorize, reject or re-schedule proposed emergency changes.

4. Monitor hardware capacity utilization reports and reviews, authorize or defer proposed upgrades.

5. Define and implement major infrastructure projects to correct recurring service level impacting problems.

6. Manage systems planning activities covering new service planning coordinated with capacity management and resource allocation activities

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited university and 10 years of technical experience

10 years of experience in an IT environment.

7 years' experience of staff management.

7 years IT program/project management experience

3 years vendor management/negotiation experience

3 years experience with Storage technologies
