Job Posting Title: Senior Program Manager in Core Relevance, apply machine learning to solve real problems in Global Ranking Team
Since Bing launched in June of 2009 it is the only search engine to have gained ground against Google in the US and today we serve almost 6 billion queries a month in the US. We're not just stopping there; we're continuously attracting new users, we want to win globally, and we are changing how people think about Microsoft and Search. Our mission statement is to empower people with knowledge and we're moving beyond serving web results and are increasingly becoming the intelligence engine behind all Microsoft products. We have a long road ahead and we can't take on such an ambitious goal without your help!
Our Group: Core Relevance
The Core Relevance PM team is responsible for applying machine learning technology to solve real user problems. We are one of the few teams working directly on moving a line item on the OSD President executive score card. We are focused on returning the best web results for every query on Bing.com in the US market and we're expanding our scope to think globally, and pivoting beyond Bing.com to becoming the intelligence engine to power other Microsoft services such as Windows, Xbox, Office, and Windows Phone.
The Core Relevance PM team is a small group of passionate individuals who are on the cutting edge of computer science, experimenting quickly, shipping fast, doing complex data analysis, and combining science and engineering. We cherish the culture of small incubation teams that operate very similar to a start-up. Most successful PMs in the relevance team are often those that are not afraid to disrupt the norm and innovate in areas where others think there is not much opportunity. If you love building things, algorithms, big data mining, machine learning, data sciences and analysis, and other artificial intelligence technologies this team is for you. We have gone far beyond where academia is today because of our unsurpassed access to the data, technology, world class people, and technological resources; there are very limited number of places in the world where you can work on a feature and immediately see it in action and get live feedback.
Global Ranking team
Global Ranking team is a sub-team in Bing Core Relevance group and is in charge of improving the web search results and delivering the highest relevance quality by applying machine learning models for >100 international markets.
Key Responsibilities
In your first six months on the job you will be expected to own a relevance opportunity and work with some of the best engineers to deliver it to users. Specifically you will need to: (1) do data analysis to discover a relevance opportunity for a user experience, (2) define the measurement for what a successful solution looks like, (3) brainstorm multiple solutions to solve that problem, (4) build, experiment, and measure these solutions, and (5) ship the best performing of those solutions.
Specifically in this role, you will own the most important relevance feature for all international markets that will be a major contributor to the user experience - web relevance. Without web search, there is no Search Engine! And by definition, this role places you in the heart of product innovation and the engine room of the large Bing organization.
You will primarily be responsible for the following key activities:
establish long term strategic plans for web relevance in over 100 international markets including but not limited to:
o planning and setting multi-year web relevance goals for each of the international markets
o establishing the level of investment on relevance measurement in each of these markets
o working on incubation projects to improve relevance, productivity and optimizing the operational costs in terms of infrastructure, hardware capacity, etc
drive and manage the project schedules and work with your development team to deliver these goals across all the markets
partner with key strategic cross-group teams to collaborate and communicate the various developments in the international markets
support the marketing and product planning groups in addressing the needs for specific markets
With this advantageous position, you will also be responsible and able to partner and influence a large number of other key Search features within Bing such as Relevance Measurement, Query Rewriting and Query Formulation, Index Generation and Serving technologies, Index Quality Detection and Filtering, etc.
Skills and Qualifications
We are seeking gifted Program Managers who are self-motivating, have a propensity for action, familiar with or can quickly learn about deeply algorithmic topics, and have amazing design intuition. We have to scale our algorithms to billions of documents and petabytes of data. This is the cutting edge of computer science - extremely technical and extremely data driven. We're looking for the cream of the crop inside and outside of Microsoft - PMs who drive for results, aren't afraid to cross boundaries by coding or designing mockups, who can fluently cross the language barriers of technologies and customers, have a startup mentality, work closely with Microsoft Research, are extremely creative, can build and mentor teams of high powered PMs, and who want to win in the biggest battleground on the web today.
Besides the core PM skills such as leadership and communication, a fundamental skill to be successful here is a great problem solver. You will be tasked on solving problems that no one in the world has solved before. You must have a degree in computer science. A background in machine learning, algorithms, large scale systems, and statistics is a plus but not required.
Microsoft is an Equal Opportunity Employer (EOE) and strongly supports diversity in the work place.
