Responsibilities

The Project Manager, MathXL, is responsible for managing development of online MathXL assessment and tutorial content within project guidelines, budgets, schedules, and quality standards. Responsibilities include: overseeing the schedule, budget and content for assigned projects; coordinating the work of vendors, in-house content specialists, correlators, and various freelancers to complete tasks for assigned projects. Responsibilities may also include the creation and management of custom courses, as needed. In addition, the Project Manager works with resources such as editorial, sales, marketing, media producers, product managers, and customer service in order to communicate math content needs, educate them about our products, produce content for custom projects, and communicate relevant issues back and forth. This position will also contribute to establishing and periodically reviewing authoring and testing guidelines and standards in order to best meet the needs of the user.

The Project Manager may also participate in the development of new products by creating and/or reviewing functional specs, providing feedback on features desired to create a more efficient and accurate tutorial program, and testing all releases of the front and Back End tutorial-creation tools.

Dollar responsibilities (budget and/or revenue)

Responsible for monitoring individual project budgets that range from $2-250K.

Supervisory responsibilities (direct and indirect)

In-house: Project Supervisors, Content Managers, Content Specialists

Freelancers: Content Specialists, Correlators, Testers

Vendors: Content development, correlation and testing vendors

1. PROJECT MANAGEMENT (65%)
- Monitor and manage project schedules to meet publishing deadlines.
- Assign and review correlating, development, quality assurance testing, and correction tasks.
- Correlate content as needed, train content specialists in correlations.
- Track project expenses and approve invoices.
- Monitor and coordinate schedules of assigned custom content projects.
- Create status reports as needed.

2. PEOPLE MANAGEMENT (10%)
- Monitor quality of work.
- Assist personnel managers in appraising performance.
- Reward and discipline employees.
- Assist in the hiring and training of employees and freelancers.

3. COMMUNICATION (10%)
- Collaborate with Director on project schedule.
- Alert department to potential risks and problems.
- Create and/or review functional specs of new tutorial software products or authoring/development tools.
- Communicate with in-house staff and freelancers about programming standards and requirements.

4. PRODUCT PLANNING (5%)
- Work with the Math Media Group, Project Manager, Sales, Marketing, and the Editorial group to determine a timeline for release of assigned products.
- Monitor schedules to ensure products are done on time and accurately.

5. SUPPORT AND EDUCATION (5%)
- Train and provide assistance for freelancers and in-house staff.
- Assist internal staff (such as product support, sales staff, and MXL/MML producers) to prevent or solve technical problems and customer issues.
- Provide assistance with customer complaints or problems.

6. PROFESSIONAL AND TECHNICAL (5%)
- Become familiar with the online programs and authoring/development tools.
- Keep up-to-date on developments in online education.
- Increase computer skills and knowledge of new technologies.

Related work experience

2-5 years experience with project management and/or publishing experience. Mathematics teaching and/or tutoring experience.

Formal education or equivalent

BS/BA in mathematics or statistics required; additional background or coursework in mathematics education desired, but not required. Advanced schooling preferred.

Skills

Knowledge of Microsoft products required. Programming or math software package knowledge a plus. Excellent technical written and verbal communication skills are essential.

Other

Keen attention to detail. Ability to hire, motivate, and manage staff. Expert problem-solving skills.
