As a VMware Consultant, you will provide customers technical leadership in the installation, configuration, and implementation of VMware products and services. You will help to document best practices in developing and deploying VMware solutions, and feed them into our knowledge base for best practices by customers and partners. This group gives the consultant the opportunity to work in most of the top Fortune 500 companies in the world. Services include (but not limited to) Operational Readiness, Business Continuance, Disaster Recovery, and Storage, and IT services Delivery.
Job Description Responsibilities:
- Provide technical leadership to VMware professional services consulting project teams, which will include project work at customer sites
- Design and develop innovative solutions to customer requirements using our server and desktop products, with assistance from our internal engineering group as required
- Maintain current knowledge of the entire VMware product line
- Assist in the development of standard reusable VMware productized consulting service offerings, including definition of tasks, deliverables and standard estimate
- Participate in the pre-sales process to understand customer business and technical objectives and product requirements, in order to develop effective solutions
- Help to document best practices in developing and deploying VMware solutions, and feed them into our knowledge base for reuse by customers and partners
- Recruit and mentor other technical consulting staff
Requirements:
- The ideal candidate would have domain level understanding in one or more of the following areas:
1) Cloud Infrastructure (Data Center Design, Networking, Systems Hardware, System Architecture Virtualization, Systems Management, Security)
2) Platforms (Application Development, Application Design, SDLC, Java, UI, Spring, IDE's, SOA)
3) Management (Datacenter Management, Application Management, Cloud Management, JMX, SNMP, MIBS)
- 10+ years of relevant experience
- At least 6 years experience in customer-facing positions as a professional services consultant or engineer, preferably with an Internet or Big 5 consulting organization
- Experience with modern software development methodologies, with emphasis on software and hardware architecture, and infrastructure design and development
- At least 3 years experience in infrastructure architecture and design of complex distributed systems environments, including failover techniques, recovery/rollback, and application partitioning
- At least 2 years experience in a technical lead role for small- or medium-size teams
- Strong practical Windows Server or Linux systems administration skills
- Strong application software development for one or more of the Linux, Unix, Windows Server and Desktop operating systems. Systems programming or OS internal level skills would be an advantage
- Understanding of computer server architectures, including peripheral interfaces (SCSI, RAID, Ethernet) and multi-processor designs (SMP)
- Familiarity with systems management concepts, processes and standards (eg SNMP); capacity/performance management and tuning; and storage and network management
- Understanding of modern IT production data center and Internet (ISP/ASP) hosting operations
- Strong Perl programming/scripting skills required. Programming in C/C++ and Unix Shell are also an advantage
- A good practical understanding of Web-based application development, including cgi-bin, and Apache or IIS server platforms
- Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
- Ability to travel up to 75 percent of the time
