As a Database Administrator working for VMware, you will be responsible for the deployment, capacity management, configuration management, performance tuning, and daily administration for VMware's cloud infrastructure database systems. You will also serve as a third tier escalation for incidents or problems that occur related to database issues. As the database administrator in this role, you must be able to understand application level performance characteristics as they relate to relational models, capacity requirements, and have the proficiency to proactively identify performance issues to maintain an acceptable service level for associated environments and applications.
Responsibilities:
- Engineer and maintain database solutions specific to a shared cloud operations environment
- Serve as third tier escalation and provide root cause for incidents or problems in the environment that could be related to the shared database environment
- Engage with application and system resources to plan for configuration, performance and capacity requirements
- Work with project management resources related to the implementation and sustained configuration management of the database environment
- Own configuration change activities required to deploy and maintain the shared database environment
- Implement database backup and recovery procedures as related to version and product set
- Assist end users with SQL query writing for optimal performance
- Create and maintain documentation to support configuration management of the shared database environment
- Deploy and manage database tool sets to be used in the management of the shared database environment
- Create knowledge base articles that can be used by tier one and tier two support engineers in response to routine incidents around the shared database environment
- Identify and schedule maintenance events as required
- Monitor performance characteristics on a regular basis and implement configuration change that provides consistent performance
- Adherence to policies, processes and procedures within your areas of responsibility
- Assistance with execution of projects related to areas of responsibility
- Hands on management of databases and associated tool sets
- Installation and configuration of new database instances as required
- Audit and remediation of discrepancies from best practices and industry standards
- Recommending and implementing monitoring test sets to ensure database availability
- Respond to incidents and service requests as required
- Analyze data and develop meaningful reports used by technical and business leaders
- Participate in a 24x7 on call rotation
- Be able to adjust to differing direction with regards to database products and infrastructure
Skills & Experience:
- 8+ years in an enterprise class IT or managed service organization
- 6+ years hands on experience in relational database system administration
- 4+ recent years working with PostgreSQL
- Working knowledge and support of MySQL, MSSQL, or Oracle 10g/11g releases
- Experience with clustering technologies such as Redhat Cluster services, or Oracle Real Application Clusters
- Solid understanding of RDBM concepts and data normalization
- Experience managing sizeable databases in a large 24x7 environment
- Experience tuning SQL queries, to include sub-selects, views, triggers, rules, and stored procedures
- Comfortable with the Linux/Unix command line environment
- Ability to analyze requirements delivered by system and application administrators and develop a database management strategy
- Ability to mine performance and capacity data from various data sources and formulate valuable analysis
- Ability to efficiently prioritize and organize competing work demands
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS/CIS), related degree or equivalent work experience
- Excellent documentation, communication and interpersonal skills
