This Senior Counsel position will act as the lead IP lawyer for the GE Healthcare IT, Performance Solutions and Global Services businesses, and is responsible for setting and driving the global intellectual property strategy for GE Healthcare's services, consulting and software businesses.
Essential Responsibilities:
The Senior IP Counsel is responsible for all aspects of IP, including developing a deep understanding of the current GE Healthcare products, IP assets and market dynamics to develop models for protecting, leveraging and building key IP assets to develop sustainable competitive advantage for the business. The Senior Counsel will implement world class software practices and will drive cultural/organizational change and process improvements. The successful candidate will work closely with business leaders in Healthcare IT and Global Services to assist in the development of market leading business models that strategically leverage GE proprietary IP. In addition, the Senior Counsel will drive the capture of new IP by facilitating activities from idea generation through patent filing, prosecution, maintenance and licensing and enforcement. GE Healthcare is a dynamic business in a rapidly developing global market and the Senior IP Counsel will provide advice and counsel to business leaders on a broad range of global IP issues, including the convergence of global industrial systems with the power of advanced computing, analytics and new levels of connectivity permitted by the Internet. This position will report to the GCs of GE Healthcare's IT & Performance Solutions and Global Services businesses, and will join the global IP leadership team of GE Healthcare.
1. Works closely with R&D/engineering to ensure that ideas and Invention Disclosures are generated and captured;
2. Manages a team of four lawyers and non-legal professionals that develop IP for the business and coordinate all product-related software licensing and open source software compliance.
3. Ensures that patent filings are of high quality on commercially significant inventions by working with R&D, business managers and marketing;
4. Supervises prosecution of patent applications to ensure that meaningful protection is obtained;
5. Works with Business Development team to secure revenue through out-licensing where appropriate;
6. Supervises and/or guides work on opposition/interference/re-examination proceedings;
7. Advises on IP-related agreements;
8. Ensures freedom to operate and minimizes exposure to third party IP, including obtaining opinions where appropriate;
9. Manages IP litigation for business with GC and Chief Litigator for GEHC, while keeping the business informed of ongoing and projected costs;
10. Provides IP advice on major transactions and acquisitions, including due diligence activities;
11. Works with business leaders to set and implement appropriate IP strategies to achieve business objectives;
12. Responsible for IP portfolio and budget;
13. Works through external trade and professional associations to influence IP legislation and policy to benefit GEHC's business interest, where appropriate.

Qualifications/Requirements:
1. Member of the state bar (or equivalent), or equivalent attorney qualification or registration in another state and is or was a USPTO registered attorney.
2. 8 years of legal experience in a top law firm and/or corporate legal department
3. Experience in the software industry, including previous experience with software licensing.
4. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
5. Demonstrated leadership skills.
6. Experience in developing innovative global IP strategies in the IT field.
7. Demonstrated ability to be commercially aware
8. Demonstrated ability to manage a budget.
9. Demonstrated ability to manage/lead people.
10. Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with senior management.
