Position Announcement for Database Administrator
The Department of Housing and Dining Services, Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas, invites qualified applicants for the position of Database Administrator. This position serves as part of a dynamic information technology team responsible for providing technical support to a large, diverse department that provides high quality services to students.
Position Information: The Database Administrator is a 12-month full-time, benefits eligible, unclassified position and reports to the Information Resource Manager.
General Description: The position provides software configuration and database development, interface design and development, application maintenance, and operational support and security for the Department of Housing and Dining Services (HDS) with a focus on the HDS Financial Services area and the development and implementation of a new HDS accounting system.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Analysis and Design Meet with users and management to define requirements and determine appropriate system configuration and data model for new Housing and Dining Services (HDS) accounting system. Analyze and design system interfaces to other K-State and third party applications. Plan, analyze and design specialized databases, queries, reports, system add-ons, data migration strategies, and operational processes. Provide technical expertise regarding the implementation and web based database systems with primary focus on the HDS accounting system. Regularly participate in team meetings and assist in the development of project plans.
- Programming Develop and test Web based HTTP database applications for new HDS accounting system and existing applications. Write queries, and reports, with focus on multivariate data extraction. Develop and test interface and conversion programs from existing FoxPro system to new HDS accounting system. Research and troubleshoot application problems. Resolve and document the resolution of problems, program changes, operating procedures, and technical reference materials. Develop end-user testing scenarios and lead functional users in implementation of new HDS accounting system and other programs. Enhance existing code and/or write new programs or reports per project specifications. Adhere to application development policies and procedures.
- Operational Support Integrate Active Directory user access levels into the database applications. Provide routine system performance monitoring. Communicate and coordinate technical tasks with financial services staff and HDS information technology staff to integrate HMS Manager and new HDS accounting system. Work with K-State Division of Financial Services technical staff to ensure proper data interface system security, and implementation of e-forms and iSIS (PeopleSoft) upgrades. Provide on-call support and proactive system maintenance to all applications in a team environment. Serve as primary technical support for Kronos timekeeping system.
- Consulting/Training Provide expert technical advice and consulting to system users, other K-State technical staff, and third party vendors.
- Technical Attend meetings, conferences, and training sessions to increase knowledge of vendor applications, developer tools, programming languages, and technical environment. Maintain currency in the profession.
Qualifications: Requires a bachelor's degree and two years' experience in database or HTTP programming and availability to provide on-call support as needed on week-ends and evenings. Preferred qualifications include:
- Bachelor's degree in business administration, computer science, information systems, software engineering or other appropriately related technical field.
- Four years' experience in database administration and familiarity with HTTP or PHP, SQL, XML, VB.
- One year or more experience in support of accounting and financial functions.
- Good interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with little supervision. Experience working in a group setting and interacting to accomplish complex interdependent technical objectives.
- Working knowledge of HTTP and database standards and familiarity with electronic time keeping systems.
- Broad knowledge of the data processing industry and the application of digital computers to complex business problems and functions.
- Ability to learn complex new information technologies through a combination of significant personal research efforts, hands-on experience, informal and formal training.
- Experience working in a higher education environment and knowledge of the data requirements of a university.

Salary and Benefits: The starting salary is $55,000-$65,000 depending on qualifications. The university provides a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental and life insurances, retirement plan, and paid leave time.
