The firm's technology platform consists of many Servers located in hosting centers. The systems are primarily CentOS and Red Hat Linux, Solaris and VMware with associated storage systems. You will join a focused, professional team that is responsible for the support and maintenance of Linux server farms in a 24x7 environment for The New York Times web site.

This position is located in our headquarters building in New York City.

Responsibilities:

- Monitor, maintain, and optimize the New York Times Linux family of systems
- Provide day to day server hardware and software support for the Linux Systems
- Analyze System performance, conduct troubleshooting and execute break/fix solutions
- Support hardware and software rollouts as directed by our architecture and design project leaders
- Provide hands on participation in Linux operating system upgrades and application migrations
- Participate in the on call rotation.
- Install, configure, and trouble shoot SAN attached systems using EMC storage.
- Install, configure, and trouble shoot virtual systems including VMware hosts and guests
- Identify areas or processes to increase server reliability and performance
- Identify opportunities to streamline or eliminate manual system administration tasks
- Interface effectively with others to foster a cooperative, team based approach to problem resolution and/or project based work.
- Communicate effectively with all levels of technical and non-technical staff members
- Be flexible and have high energy and reliability with the ability to handle multiple demands in a fast paced environment.
- Contribute to other key department projects including: standards, process improvement, active problem reduction, ITIL practices, and metrics
- Be familiar with general office software such as Excel, MS Word, Visio, etc.

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Four + years of related technical and hands-on experience in UNIX Systems Administration and support, including VMware, Linux, web technologies and SAN attached systems.
- Experience with 24 x 7 Support for a large server environment and multi-geographic support responsibilities in a web based environment
- Active experience with the LAMP stack, and virtualization tools and techniques

Qualifications:

- Experience in web server administration
- Strong experience with LAMP Stack
- Experience with VMware, vSphere and related products
- Knowledge of Cloud Computing principles and practices as applied within a Linux environment.
- Experience with cloud provisioning
- Advanced OS concepts (eg, memory management, file systems, processes/thread management, security)
- Knowledge of High Availability, TCP/IP networking, Linux security, and system monitoring tools required.
- Korn Shell and Perl (or other Scripting language) programming required.
- Knowledge and experience with software tools including Jira, Confluence, SVN, Puppet
- Knowledge of NAS/SAN, LDAP, Automation tools, monitoring applications, server provisioning.
- Ability to perform challenging assignments under general supervision
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Good problem solving and documentation skills
- Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and deliver projects on time.
- Ability to maintain focus and perspective in a busy, time-critical production environment.
- Knowledge of networking and network devices (routers, switches, load balancers, firewalls, etc.) a plus.
- Effective configuration and troubleshooting skills with Linux file systems including file ownership and protection, file types, devices, file indirection, file system layout, inodes, disk organization
- Understanding of web support processes, traffic flow, and load balancing methods
