About our Senior Data Scientist position

Service Engineering is looking for a Data Scientist to take our online services and related big data inside of Skype to the next level. As a member of the Service Engineering team you will help drive the development of knowledge extraction technology enabled by one of the world's largest unified communications data sets.. The Data scientist role within Skype Service Engineering partners with other groups inside of the Skype division to co-create and drive the analytics strategy, teach others best practices for using and understanding data, and to uncover deep insights beyond what's possible with traditional Business Intelligence.

Microsoft is seeking and motivated Data Scientist with a demonstrated history of sharing knowledge with others and innovation with big data.

Responsibilities:

Work closely with operations and core engineering teams to identify and answer important service questions
Research, evaluate, implement, and present statistical methods to provide actionable insights.
Define new metrics and help drive feature teams to use the right metrics.
Gather and manage large datasets from multiple sources.
Data conditioning - transform data into a usable state using appropriate tools and techniques
Research new ways for modeling and predicting end-user behavior.
Lead investigations into multiple streams of product data.
Evolve and enhance systems and tools for agile data analysis and visualization.
Communicate findings to product managers and engineers

Required qualifications include:

* 4+ years of research experience in an Academic or Commercial setting;
Be familiar with classic machine learning and data mining models and algorithms;
Be familiar with classic algorithms and data structures;
Fluency with at least one programming or Scripting languages such as R/Python/Matlab/C#/Java
Be familiar with one or more statistics analysis tools (R, Matlab, SAS etc );
Be familiar with big data approaches and tools (Map/Reduce, Hadoop, Hive, etc );
Have a strong interest in modeling data for service platforms and user engagement.
Ph.D. or Masters' degree in applied mathematics, statistics, machine learning, engineering, economics, social sciences, or related fields.
