XL Capital, a leading global provider of insurance and reinsurance risk management coverage, is looking for a seasoned application product manager to help manage, support and expand its capabilities in its Investment business.
Candidates must have previous Investments system experience with such areas as Operations, Accounting, Analytics, Compliance and Reporting. The position is very much a "hands-on position" and therefore will be required to work at different levels (project management, business analysis, business communications, technical design, implementations and support).
SCOPE OF ROLE:
This role will report to the senior I.T. manager for Finance & Investments. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing a very small team of internal & external resources to support the systems aligned with our Investment business processes, data integration and reporting needs. Strong business relationships and business acumen in Investments, stakeholder expectation and financial management, understanding of compliance requirements and experience in application development and support are required and key to the role's success.
Because of the small nature of the team, the person must be a hands-on, "Jack of all trades" and be able to manage up to senior business and I.T. leaders as required.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Business Partnership: Develop and maintain strong business partnerships with business process stakeholders and project leads related to each of the key functions across the various business functions. Partner with them to understand their business strategies and processes, resourcefully solve their immediate support needs and jointly determine an appropriate I.T. strategy that will help advance their future business needs. Help drive business value by assessing automation opportunities/needs and by providing direction on where to best leverage technology.
- Support: Hands-on support of a variety of business applications with a diverse skill set will be key to the success of this role. Ensure all maintenance work & all service providers involved (internal & external) are well supported and monitored with performance tracking, metrics, reporting and with regular feedback meetings. This includes ensuring that the following are kept current and maintained; Disaster Recovery testing & plans, security compliance & FIC & audit compliance (Sarbanes and privacy compliance are key for aspects of these units). Liaise with XL's other internal technology groups to leverage existing technology in order to provide solutions and support for the Investments team.
- Resource Management: Resource responsibilities may include project managing technical leads and external vendor resources to deliver solutions for the department. Resource management will also require vendor management experience to ensure that our outsourced and managed service contracts are meeting or exceeding service level agreements (SS&C Technologies, Ironside Group, Cognizant/InfoSys resources, etc),
- Project Management: A proven track record in investment system project management, with a strong focus on business results and outcomes (business requirements gathering, business analysis, training, compliance controls, UAT, and overall management of the SDLC) is required. Provide direction and standards for implementing/development of new applications and enhancements. Ensure projects have strong business cases and I.T. outcomes are prioritized and managed towards key business outcomes, this will require attention to be paid to business process both current and future with a focus on the change impact in partnership with the business. Support the monthly project reporting requirements of the Corporate CIO working in partnership with the corporate PMO.
- Product Management: Leads the technical product planning and operational execution throughout the product lifecycle, including: gathering and prioritizing functionality through business requirements, technical and architectural design, works with a strategic manager and technical architects to define the product technical vision, and working closely with business stakeholders in meeting defined goals and timelines. Serve as a one of the technical operational contact and product technical expert. Facilitate product design, development and release process and maintain the product development road map. Coordinate the collection, description, analysis and prioritization of requests for new product functionality from business users. Create detailed use case, business requirements, and technical design. Coordinate development, testing, and deployment of new product version.
- Communication: Provide regular communications of status against progress of I.T. maintenance and projects for the business and I.T. reporting. A solid business relationship with defined and agreed governance for their key investment initiatives, is critical to the success of this role.
- Contract management : Experience in defining and managing to SOWs is required. The individual will need to understand existing master agreements and work in partnership with procurement to adjust according to the requirements of the business and I.T.
- Financial Management: Contribute to I.T. plans and financials for the department, work in partnership with business clients, to include; budget development and tracking, forecasting, variance reporting and accruals with the support of the appropriate finance controller unit.
- EE Alignment, including Solvency II: Support the integration and alignment of the Investment products with those of the Enterprise Enablement (EE) strategic program with a specific focus on delivery of the Solvency II investment deliverables.
- Support Corporate Initiatives: Work with the GTS production support and infrastructure teams on co-ordination of upgrade and support planning and delivery of firm-wide initiatives.
Qualifications
General Professional Skills:
- 10+ years working experience within an information technology based environment from the Financial Services industry supporting and developing applications with experience specific to the investment business unit.
- Ability to prioritize among multiple competing priorities along with ability to manage multiple medium and small projects simultaneously.
- Excellent and pragmatic problem solving skills, results oriented, with a "can do" attitude that can adapt to fast paced environment with changing priorities.
- Strong management, communication, interpersonal, relationship building and influencing skills with proven ability to develop strong business and technical relationships is required.
- Ability to navigate an organization quickly in order to get done what is required in a timely fashion.
- Ability to present complex concepts to different levels of the organization (business & I.T.)
- Ability to work with people both individually and in groups, able to influence change with the business and within I.T. and work cross-functionally and globally with awareness of cultural differences.
Other:
- Needs to be a results oriented, self motivated, self learning with a focus on providing business value via technology.
- Ability to assess customers needs and strategies (functionality, processes, and effectiveness) and revamp strategy and processes as necessary to improve the teams effectiveness.
- Ability to develop executive-level program presentations and communicate them at the appropriate business and I.T. levels.
- Willing to undertake some domestic and international travel when required (~5% to include such places as New York City, Hartford and Bermuda as examples).
Project Management/Development/System Skills:
- 5+ years experience in managing small and medium sized projects in an IT environment.
- Technical experience with all or some of; BI - IBM Cognos, ETL - Informatica, SQL - MS SQL, Oracle DB.
- Proficient in the use of personal computers and MS-Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Visio and Outlook
Minimum Experience
The successful candidate for this position is likely to have a minimum of years of experience.
