Microsoft Public Sector Services - Civilian for Microsoft SQL Premier Field Engineer

The Microsoft Enterprise Public Sector Services team has an opening Premier Field Engineer who will be responsible for delivering SQL technology support for a designated set of strategic Enterprise customers. This person will be responsible for delivering SQL Server support in various Enterprise environments. The ideal candidate should have at least 2-3 years' experience with SQL Server and database platforms. This candidate should possess a solid working knowledge of Microsoft Data Access Components, Windows NT/2000/2003/2008/Cluster/Server.
The candidate's primary focus will be SQL Server related issues such as supportability and troubleshooting, disaster recovery, and performance tuning. The candidate will also be responsible for identifying client related issues and assisting customers in finding the proper resources. This candidate will act as a resource to customers' operations organizations and will provide on-going support consulting for planning, deployment, change control and migration issues; and will be responsible for SQL workshops and training for customer's existing support staff. The candidate will be expected to demonstrate and give examples of their ability to function and contribute to a team-oriented environment. Excellence in written case documentation is expected, and past cases will be reviewed.
Goal: To provide high quality technical reactive and proactive support in regards to SQL technology to a designated set of strategic Premier customers.
Responsibilities: Deliver timely and high quality incident resolution focusing on root cause analysis, prevention, and knowledge transfer. Utilize knowledge of the customer environment to resolve issues in a timely manner. Manage escalations and sub-cases to ensure timely and high quality resolution of all issues. Develop and implement strategies for providing proactive support resulting in fewer incidents, increased availability, or accelerated deployments. Develop relationships with technical directors or lead architects for the technology you support resulting in more participation in planning and improved satisfaction in support. Partner with the Technical Account Manager (TAM) to effectively manage critical situations including documented action plans and daily status updates for the customer and Microsoft management. Develop a working relationship with Microsoft consulting and field staff at your accounts that results in enhanced cooperation and mutual support in achieving each other's goals. Execute formal post-mortem process on closure of critical issues. Initiate and participate in triage meetings to share knowledge with other engineers and to efficiently resolve customer problems. Participate in Early Assist for key products in order to maintain product knowledge and ensure delivery of high quality support to Enterprise customers. Assist with delivery of supportability reviews for your customers. Write technical articles for the Knowledge Base and white papers.
Qualifications:
- 4 year technical degree or equivalent work experience, plus 3 years' experience in technical support or MIS in an Enterprise environment
- Demonstrated technical competence with Microsoft SQL Server 2000/2005/2008, and BackOffice Technologies, and Windows NT/2000/2003/Cluster applications
- Strong technical writing skills and familiarity with Microsoft Word
- Ability to effectively communicate with customer managers and executives on technical and business issues
- Familiar with SQL Server replication, Active Server Pages
- Working knowledge of HTML, VB Script, Visual C++
- Strong organization, time management, project management, and negotiation skills.
- The position will require travel to customer sites
- Current MCSE required within 6 months of joining the team
The successful candidate will have a BS/BA degree or equivalent work experience combined with a minimum of 4 years relevant work experience including expertise in enterprise architecture as well as infrastructure deployment and/or distributed system implementation. Frequent travel (up to 50%) is an integral part of this job, as are high levels of recognition and visibility. Applicants must be able to start within 30 days of acceptance.
