Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

This position exists to support the practitioner's performance in appropriately documenting and coding patient encounters.

The Documentation and Coding Consultant is a certified subject matter expert in the area of documentation, coding. He/she is responsible to work in collaboration with the Physician Director for Documentation and Coding and the Director of Professional Development to develop and implement regional coding initiatives and goals.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's Degree in Management, Education, Health Management, or related field

Following certifications required:

Coding certification by the American Academy of professional Coders (AAPC) and American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)

Certified Professional Coder : CPC and/or CCS-P

5 years of documentation and coding instruction, with focus on E&M documentation and coding concepts and conventions for multiple specialties

5 years' experience working in medical coding and billing in physician-based settings such as physician office, group practices, multi-specialty clinics

Ability to work well with physicians and senior level leaders

Knowledge of adult learning principles

Requires in-depth knowledge of the most current versions of ICD - CM and CPT Coding systems and knowledge of HCPCS Level II coding system

3 years supervisory or management experience

Experience with developing coding and auditing tools

Knowledge of third party reimbursement regulations and billing practices (ie CMS, HMO and other commercial payers)

Knowledge of governmental standards and guidelines applicable to coding and billing

Knowledge of Medical Records documentation guidelines

Expertise in Microsoft office suite

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Highly organized, self-motivated individual who can work independently

Excellent time management and problem solving skills

Ability to work well with others with diverse backgrounds and at various organizational levels and ability to work well within a team

Preferred Education and Experience:

Master's Degree in Health Care Administration or related field

Certification as a Coding Instructor by AAPC

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:

Following certifications required:

Coding certification by the American Academy of professional Coders (AAPC) and American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
