Job Title: PVD Engineer

Job Location: Latrobe, PA

Looking for a highly capable engineer to be part of the global PVD team in Kennametal. The position will be located at the Corporate Technology Center at Latrobe, PA. Kennametal manufactures tools for machining advanced materials, utilizing proprietary coating and substrate materials.

Summary of Job Responsibilities:

  1. Develop cutting edge PVD coatings through disciplined research methodology
  2. Lead new product development projects using stage-gate process implementing new coatings
  3. Provide expert troubleshooting, and maintenance support to R&D coating furnaces
  4. Work with furnace and coating vendors to jointly develop next generation coating technology
  5. Support manufacturing processes, and resolve coating quality issues
  6. Upgrade coating manufacturing processes to improve quality, reduce cost
  7. Represent Kennametal in academia, scout and build suitable partnerships

Skills/Knowledge Required:

  1. BS, MS or Ph.D in Material Sci, Physics, or similar
  2. Hands on experience in running and troubleshooting industrial PVD furnaces is desirable
  3. Good familiarity with coating characterization techniques
  4. Experience in research methods, such as hypothesis development, creating factorial design of experiment, statistical data analysis
  5. Experience in writing reports, and academic articles
  6. Experience in developing wear resistant PVD coatings (TiN, TiAlN, TiC), particularly for industrial components is a strong plus
  7. Ability and experience to lead cross-functional teams, or supervisory experience is a strong plus
  8. Highly adaptability to change
