We are presently looking for a Director of Software Engineering to lead an agile team working on next-generation sports analytics and insights. This individual will also collaborate with talented internal teams from Data Science, Product, Operations, and Sales organizations as well as the Engineering leads from other verticals. This individual will be responsible for setting the Sports engineering roadmap, maintaining the current suite of Sports products and creating next generation Sports solutions utilizing machine learning, computer vision, and statistical data science.

This individual must be a strong business and technical leader who thrives on building new products from the ground up and refactoring existing systems and teams to meet the needs of an aggressively growing business. This is a great opportunity to define, manage and launch new Sports products that exhibit the pace and energy of a start-up environment, yet executed with the support of a robust organization.

We are looking for a self-starter who has a vision and passion for data and is looking to take the engineering teams to the next level. You are someone who can lead a global distributed team of talented individuals, and is unafraid of rolling up their sleeves to deliver on the vision set forth. The ideal candidate must have an exceptional track record of releasing products on time and in budget with a superior understanding of agile software principles and test-driven development.

The ideal candidate will have spent a fair amount of time working in Sports or Marketing/Advertising technology spaces and will be familiar with the application of computer vision, machine learning, and big data to those arenas. The individual must possess strong knowledge of large-scale SaaS architectures, scalable API design, and streaming data technologies.   • Own technology definition and development for current and future Nielsen Sports products.
  • Manage several remote team of software engineers in the US, Germany, and Canada.
  • Hire and build out software development staff in multiple offices.
  • Manage key infrastructure development projects including integrating existing systems across offices.
  • Provide leadership and training to staff in architecture, agile management and test-driven development.
  • Interface and collaborate successfully with other engineering and business groups.
  • Provide development roadmaps and planning to executive leadership.
  • Create and roll out best practice development standards across offices.
  • Be responsible and accountable for everything that is produced by your engineering teams.
  • Manage all aspects of the sports product's development process, including conception, development, publishing, and delivery.
  • Collaborate on the creation of business plans for new categories of data collection and data points to collect.


  • 7+ years of hands-on leadership in an agile development environment
  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience. Masters Degree or PhD in CS or related field is highly desired.
  • Strong architecture and development experience including comfort with both OO and functional paradigms, API design, Test Automation, etc.
  • Strong data engineering experience including a deep understanding of SQL and NoSQL databases, ETL, and technologies related to data analytics such as Spark, Hadoop, Elasticsearch, etc.
  • Strong passion for DevOps including experience architecting applications for AWS or a similar cloud environment.
  • Strong track record of delivering software products on time and without critical bugs.
  • Experience managing and expanding a distributed team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.


  • Experience in building computer vision or image/video recognition projects.
  • Experience in sentiment analysis.
  • Experience in working with social data feeds from a variety of sources.
  • Experience in digital media technologies.
  • Ability to travel 20% of the time.
  • German language ability a plus.
